Subject: List of approved medical examiners with Indian Maritime Administration.
Introduction:
The Directorate General of Shipping under the relevant provisions of Merchant Shipping Act 1958 and the rules framed there under appoints medical examiners for the purpose of conducting medical examination of Indian seafarers serving Indian flag ships. These medical examiners are approved by the Directorate General of Shipping as per the procedure prescribed in the relevant rules and the notices issues from time to time. The Directorate till December, 2010 has approved 204 medical examiners for the various ports on the coast of India and places in the hinterland. A consolidated list of approved medical examiners in alphabetical order of the State/City is outlined in
General Conditions:
The approved medical examiners up to the age of 65 years are not required to renew their approval. However, such medical examiners exceeding the age of 65 years may extend their letter of approval as per the procedure prescribed in Merchant Shipping
Notice 23 of 2010.
3. The validity of this approval is subject to timely submission of periodical returns and compliance with the relevant provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act 1958, rules framed there under and the procedures prescribed in the notices issued from time to time.
Enforcement:
The Indian National Shipowners Association (INSA), Maritime Association of Shipowners, Shipmanagers and Agents (MASSA), Foreign Owners Representatives and Ship Managers Association (FOSMA), Coastal Operators Shipmanagers Association (COSMA), Indian Coastal Conference (ICC), the Seafarers Union and all seafarers etc., are advised to ensure that the medical examination of seafarers is carried out as per the procedures prescribed in the relevant rules and notification of the Directorate.
Considering that physical and mental fitness of new entrant or seafarers is vital to the safety of their lives and other crew/passengers on board, property and the marine environment, the Directorate shall expect the medical examiners, ship owner and seafarers etc., to discharge their duties in the broader interest of shipping. Any infringement of the rules or notification may please be brought to the notice of the Director General of Shipping to take timely preventive and corrective measures. In this regard, all concerned are advised to peruse and take special note of Merchant Shipping
Notice 9 of 2011
in respect of Contravention of Directorate General of Shipping's directives on conduct of medical examination by approved medical examiners.
The notice comes into force with immediate effect and supercedes Merchant Shipping Notice 2 of 2007.
The Directorate shall keep notice under review and update from time to time. This issues with the approval of Director General of Shipping.
