The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), functioning under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, serves as India's Maritime Regulator, established under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958. It is entrusted with overseeing the crewing and manning of merchant ships and ensuring world-class training and skill development for seafarers.

Internationally, the DGS represents India at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other regional forums, while conducting comprehensive port and flag state inspections and granting technical approvals. In the domain of shipping development, the Directorate formulates and implements policies to strengthen the commercial viability of merchant vessels and actively supports shipbuilding in India, with the backing of 14 Mercantile Marine Divisions across the nation. As the Directorate proudly celebrates 75 years of service to the nation, it reaffirms its commitment to advancing the Maritime India Vision 2030 and the Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, ensuring that India's maritime sector continues to remain safe, secure, sustainable, and smart.
