Sustainability and Green Shipping Initiatives

The Engineering Wing plays a pivotal role in advancing sustainability and green shipping across India's maritime sector. Its responsibilities include the implementation of all IMO-mandated environmental requirements on Indian-flagged ships and the formulation of national policies to align with evolving global standards.

Key focus areas include:

  • Development of technical standards and policies for alternative marine fuels, such as biofuels, green hydrogen, and ammonia, to facilitate the transition to low- and zero-carbon shipping.

  • Design and implementation of Shore-to-Ship Power (SSP) systems in Indian ports, enabling vessels to shut down auxiliary engines while at berth and thus reducing emissions and noise pollution in port areas.

These initiatives form part of India's broader commitment to decarbonization, climate action, and sustainable maritime practices.
