India- Norway Workshop on Occupational Safety & Health in Ship Recycling Bhavnagar

The Directorate General of Shipping participated in the Norway–India Collaborative Workshop on Occupational Safety and Health in Ship Recycling at Bhavnagar, jointly organised by the International Labour Organization, the Royal Norwegian Consulate General, Mumbai, and the Alang Sosiya Ship Recycling General Workers Association (ASSRGWA). Dignitaries included Shri Sameer Kumar Khare, Chairman, National Shipping Board; Shri Fredrik Bjerke Abdelmaguid, Consul General; Shri Gopikrishna C, Engineer & Ship Surveyor-cum-Deputy DG (Tech), DG(S); Shri Gopinandan P, Engineer & Ship Surveyor, MMD Kandla; and Shri Vidhyadhar Rane, General Secretary, ASSRGWA, alongside officials from GMB, representatives of SRIA, trade union leaders, industry stakeholders, researchers, and academia. In panels, DG(S) outlined plans to strengthen occupational safety, worker upskilling and welfare, HKC/ISO compliance, and social infrastructure to position Alang as a global benchmark. The delegation also visited Bansal Ship Breakers Pvt. Ltd. and Baijnath Melaram Recycling at Alang to review safety and environmental safeguards, including a new worker housing colony being built to international standards. The workshop and site visits marked a milestone in India–Norway cooperation toward safe, sustainable, worker-centric ship recycling.
