India’s Participation at the 34th IMO Assembly – London, 2025

India has been re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council with an outstanding mandate of 154 votes out of 169—the highest among all contesting States in Category B. This category represents the ten countries with the largest interest in international seaborne trade, underscoring India’s growing influence and leadership in global maritime affairs.

This strong outcome reflects the sustained diplomatic and technical engagement of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The overwhelming international support highlights global confidence in India’s maritime governance, safety standards, and environmental stewardship.

The Indian delegation to the IMO Assembly was led by Secretary, MoPSW, Shri Vijay Kumar, along with Director General of Shipping, Shri Shyam Jagannathan, senior officers of the Directorate General of Shipping, representatives from the High Commission of India in London, and key maritime industry stakeholders.

India’s continuous presence in Category B marks a proud, uninterrupted legacy at the IMO. The country remains firmly committed to advancing global maritime safety, security, energy transition, digitalisation, and seafarer welfare—aligned with the evolving priorities of the international maritime sector.
