Its work focuses on the prevention and control of pollution from ships as regulated under the MARPOL Convention, covering oil, bulk chemicals, sewage, garbage, and emissions to air, including air pollutants and greenhouse gases. The MEPC also addresses issues such as ballast water management, anti-fouling systems, ship recycling, pollution preparedness and response, as well as the designation of special areas and particularly sensitive sea areas.
