NCSR (Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue)
The Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR) is responsible for issues related to maritime navigation and communication. Its work includes the review and approval of ship routing measures and ship reporting systems, as well as the development of carriage requirements and performance standards for navigational and communication equipment. The Sub-Committee also oversees the long-range identification and tracking (LRIT) system and the advancement of e-navigation. In addition, NCSR addresses search and rescue matters and the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), including the recognition of service providers. It is supported by joint working groups, such as the ICAO/IMO Joint Working Group on the Harmonization of Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue and the IMO/ITU Joint Experts Group on Maritime Radiocommunication Matters.
The Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR) held its 12th session at IMO Headquarters in London (in-person with hybrid participation) from 13 to 22 May 2025.
