Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR)
The Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR) is responsible for issues related to pollution prevention and response within the IMO’s mandate. Its scope covers all annexes of the MARPOL Convention, as well as the control and management of harmful aquatic organisms in ships’ ballast water and sediments, biofouling, and anti-fouling systems. The Sub-Committee also addresses pollution preparedness, response, and cooperation for oil and hazardous and noxious substances, along with the safe and environmentally sound recycling of ships. The Working Group on the Evaluation of Safety and Pollution Hazards of Chemicals operates under the PPR Sub-Committee.
The Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response held its 12th session at IMO Headquarters in London (in-person with hybrid participation) from 27 to 31 January 2025. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Anita Mäkinen of Finland.
